Fuel Oil is a fraction obtained from petroleum distillation, either as a distillate or a residue. Broadly speaking, oil is any liquid petroleum product, which is burned in a furnace or boiler for the generation of heat or used in an engine for the generation of power, except oils having a flash point of approximately 40 °C (104 °F). Oil is made of long hydrocarbon chains, particularly alkanes, cyclo alkanes and aromatics. The term Fuel Oil is also used in a stricter sense to refer only to the heaviest commercial fuel that can be obtained from crude oil, heavier than gasoline and naphtha. It is available in 125 Cst, 180 Cst and 380 Cst. grades.
Fuel oils are used as fuel for power generation, marine bunkers and large industrial heating plants.

Light diesel oil, or LDO, is a blend of components from the distillation process of crude. It is used in engines with a rpm less than 750, such as boilers and furnaces. LDO is also referred to as distillate fuel or marked oil.
LDO is a blend of distillates feed and residual oil. It is primarily recommended for stationary or slow speed diesel engines and as Industrial Fuel. LDO is used in medium and slow speed diesel engines with less than 750 rpm, typically.

Residual fuel oil: A general classification for the heavier oils, known as No. 6 fuel oils, that remain after the distillate fuel oils and lighter hydrocarbons are distilled away in refinery operations.
The primary end use for residual fuel oil is as a fuel in simple furnaces such as power plants and industrial boilers. It is also the primary fuel used on ocean-going ships, where it is called bunker fuel
